What is the Welcome Suica “reference paper”?

The "reference paper" is a small paper with your Welcome Suica’s validity details printed on it, that must be shown to station staff upon request. We don’t provide this paper, but it can easily be obtained in Japan by inserting your Welcome Suica into a JR ticket machine, and pressing the "issue reference paper" button.
