In Japan, the emergency number is 119.
Most doctors do not speak English in Japan and we understand this could be worrying, however you can find English-speaking medical help in Japan through the following websites:
- Doctor and Institute Search and General Health Advice from the Japan National Tourist Office (JNTO). You can filter for English-speaking services.
- Hospital Search in Japan (search by illness/specialization/hospital name)
- Tokyo Metropolitan Medical Institution Information (Japanese only)
This website lists all doctors who speak a foreign language. You can choose the language, specialty and location. Sadly it’s only available in Japanese, or using automated translation.
Be sure to purchase travel insurance and travel health insurance before your trip, and have the policy details with you at all times.
When being treated in Japan, travel health insurance will take care of very large amounts directly. Smaller amounts will have to be paid on the spot. Remember to ask for an English invoice to get reimbursed later. Most insurance companies will accept Japanese invoices with an accompanying translation.
You can find more information in our article Health Problems when in Japan.
